Rachel Pendray—In memory of a beautiful life
Rachel Pendray was born on January 1, 1986, to Mark and Eleanor Pendray. Though her life was unexpectedly ended on Sunday, December 3, 2006, Rachel’s spirit will live on in the hearts of the family and friends who love her.

A native Houstonian, Rachel was a natural born athlete. Before the age of 3, she had already developed a love of gymnastics. As Rachel grew, so did her love of sports. Years spent as a member of community swimming and diving teams lead her to become a high school district champ in diving during her freshman year at Spring Woods High School.

Her love of athletics also found a natural outlet when she became a cheerleader, serving multiple years as a member and captain of the Spring Woods Varsity cheerleading squad. Upon graduation from Spring Woods in 2004, Rachel enrolled at Sam Houston State University, where she was one of the inaugural members of the newly created All Girl Cheer Squad. During her 2 1/2 years at SHSU, Rachel’s drive to excel carried over into her academic life as she proudly maintained a a 4.0 GPA and had plans to continue her education and enroll in a Nursing Program. A Double Legacy member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, Rachel served as Service Chairman and Panhellenic Delegate. She loved sorority life, and the close friendships that she shared with their sorority sisters were very special to her.

Rachel’s faith was also something she held very dear. At Fair Haven United Methodist Church she was a member of the Youth Group, went on several mission trips, and became a vocalist in the church’s Joy2Gather contemporary praise band. At SHSU, she was affiliated with the Chi Alpha Christian Fraternity.

Rachel made the most of every moment of her life. She had an endless amount of determination, a fierce competitive spirit, a wickedly funny sense of humor, and a smile that could light up a room. She will be missed.

Rachel is survived by her mother and father, as well as her brother Charles “Chuck” Pendray, her stepmother Kathy Pendray, her stepsisters Desirae Olson, Candice Olson, and Jessica Griffin, her grandparents Betty and peter Mann of Michigan and Vivian and Effin Graham of Tennessee, and countless friends whose lives she touched. She is preceded in death by her stepmother of six years, Lisa Pendray.

Rachel Pendray, age 20, saved the life of an acquaintance several weeks before he murdered her. Rachel was cheerleading at a basketball game in Huntsville, Texas when she received a phone call from Jake Taylor, age 24, from Houston. (90 miles away) He told her that he had taken sleeping pills and wanted to commit suicide. Rachel called the Houston Police who were able to get this evil person to the hospital and save his life after 4 days in intensive care.

Several days later, despite having attempted to murder himself this person was allowed to purchase a semi automatic 9mm pistol. On December 3, 2006, Jake Taylor drove up to Rachel’s college to “thank her”. He thanked her by heartlessly shooting Rachel six times. He then bit Rachel in the leg to test if she was dead. Next he put the gun in his mouth and sent himself to hell.
