John "David" Huberty (Bear)
26 Years Old

August 31, 1984 to July 20, 2011

David was our firstborn child and only son.  He was the only sibling to his sister, Megan Huberty, who was 17-years old at the time of his murder.  He was born in Oakland, CA ,on Aug. 31, 1984 and raised in Walnut Creek, CA; then moved with the family to Hilton Head Island, SC, in July 2002.  David attended Wasatch Academy in Mt. Pleasant, UT, and graduated from Hilton Head High School in 2003.  He received his Associates Degree in Recording Arts and a Bachelors of Science Degree in Film Making from FullSail University.  He won awards in post production and editing from each program.  He was an aspiring filmmaker, artist and designer; and tested at the genius level in areas of creativity and technical knowledge.  He was a unique and gifted soul—who overcame early learning disabilities and challenges—only to be taken away by brutal killers invading his home between July 19-20, 2011.  He was 26 years old at the time of his death.  No one has been arrested and charged with his murder even when there is strong connection to other unsolved murders in
Jasper Co.,SC.
David had one cousin, Emily, who was a daily part of his life and like a big sister to him.  Emily died in a car accident at the age of 20 years, and her funeral was held on Friday, August 31 of Labor Day Weekend—also David’s birthday.  He was just turning 6 years old at the time of her death, about a week before school started.  This was a traumatic loss for the entire family and deeply affected David.  She was his babysitter, cousin and big sister.  Her sudden death had a profound impact on him and everyone in the family.
David was an “old soul” and his spirit was like that of a Bear: both strong and powerful, yet soft and cuddly like a bear cub.  From the time he was born, his family called him “Baby Bear,” and he carried his musical stuffed blue teddy bear with him everywhere.  Like a cub, he clung to his mother and wanted to be carried or held in a pack.  As he grew into a man, he became known for giving tremendous bear hugs.  Like Bear he was strong and introspective—often staying in his “cave” to dream, plan and think.  The Big Dipper is the constellation, Ursus Major, The Great Bear.  Please remember David when you look to the heavens and send him your love.

David was shot in the  back of the head in his home in Hardeeville, South Carolina on July 20, 2011 by people he probably did not know, he was 26.  He was found by friends four days later.  We can only speculate as to the circumstances of his murder, David’s home was totally ransacked but very little if anything appeared to be missing.  Three suspects, Johnathan Alexander Lilly, Donald Lee Scott, Jr. (aka “Buster”) and Kashif Shakeem Abdul Grant, were identified within a few weeks, but to date, none have been charged.  Johnathan Alexander Lilly was charged with Murder and Kidnapping by the Hardeeville Police Department in relation to a prior home invasion, but those charges have been dismissed as all of the evidence has gone missing.  David’s home was also burglarized during the investigation of the Robbery/Homicide.  Three suspects were arrested in relation to the Burglary, Christopher Jamar Clemons, Robert Lee Murdaugh and Ayuba Tau Cunningham, but all charges have been dropped.  We have been told that some of the same suspects were involved in both the Robbery/Homicide and the Burglary.  No usable forensic evidence was collected by the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division during the investigation of either crime as the entire crime scene was compromised by the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office.

We hired private investigators that uncovered numerous irregularities in the initial investigations by the law enforcement agencies involved and have produced new information to us.  This case has been inactive for over two years.
